About the Area Lochinver in Sutherland is a picturesque fishing village and harbour on the beautiful North Coast 500 coastal route. It makes an ideal base for exploring the north-west highlands of Scotland, whether by car, motorbike or cycle, on foot, by kayak/canoe or boat. The village has 2 convenience stores, Post Office, butcher, newsagent, surgery and some small shops, 2 hotels, a couple of pubs and several restaurants – one, The Albannach, was awarded a Michelin star in 2009 – a leisure centre (Assynt Leisure Centre) and petrol station. Nearby in Ullapool (45 minutes drive; accessible with a regular bus link) there are supermarkets, shops, bank, chemist, fitness centre with swimming pool and theatre. Ferries to Stornoway and The Summer Isles leave from there as do buses to Inverness.
